The Pale Continent (2002)
For the first edition of Game Chef in 2002, I created an alternate history game about African kingdoms becoming the most advanced civilizations on the planet and then invading and colonizing Western Europe. There’s some interesting stuff in the rules, but the setting and structure unfortunately just recreate a lot of colonialist dynamics (including a binary representation of race, using black and white chess pieces) with Africans in positions of power. It wasn’t really very subversive in the end, despite my intentions, and I’m somewhat horrified by many parts of it now. It’s a prime example of how diverse representations in subject matter and characters doesn’t necessarily get you very far when the creator is, at the time, a well-meaning but fairly ignorant 20-year-old white guy.
